Tips for Integrated listening,
reading and writing (HKCEE Paper 3)
- Listen to native speakers as often
as you can.
- Listen to as many different accents
as you can.
- Tune into English language programmes on radio and TV
- Learn to distinguish between words
which sound alike e.g. quiet/quite; thirty/thirteen.
- When listening, take brief notes.
Note only important details.
- Learn the art of skimming and
scanning for gist and information.
- Learn the features of common text
types (letters/memos/reports, etc.).
- Make sure you know the conventions
of letter writing i.e. how to begin and to close a letter. Also make sure
you understand the differences between formal and informal writing.
- Plan your writing and pay attention
to language and style. Practise by setting yourself
writing tasks such as writing letters on issues that you do not agree with.
- Become a competent proofreader of your
own work.
- Check regularly for mistakes in grammar,
spelling and punctuation.
